In May 2025, the Global Center for AI in Mental Health extended its reach to the international arena, participating in a prestigious panel at the World Health Organization headquarters in Geneva, Switzerland. Led by GCAIMH directors Dr. Salvador Dura-Bernal from SUNY Downstate and Dr. Amy Nitza from UAlbany, the center's representation at this global forum highlighted its growing influence in AI-driven mental health innovation.
The event, held on May 20th, brought together an influential audience including Ministers of Health and Energy, diplomatic missions, representatives from international organizations, private sector leaders, health and climate innovators, and investors.
The gathering featured multiple engagement formats designed to foster collaboration and innovation, including an opening plenary, an innovation marketplace, reverse pitch sessions, and focused thematic discussions. GCAIMH's participation in this high-level forum underscored the center's growing recognition as a leader in the emerging field of AI-driven mental health solutions.
This international presence reflects the strength of the partnership between the SUNY University at Albany, Downstate Health Sciences University, and the Health Innovation Exchange (HIEx). As Brooklyn's only health sciences university, SUNY Downstate provides a unique foundation for translating cutting-edge research into practical applications that can be deployed in real-world settings.
By engaging with global health leaders and showcasing its work at the WHO, GCAIMH demonstrates its commitment to addressing mental health challenges that transcend borders. The center continues to position both Downstate University, UAlbany and the broader SUNY system as pioneers in ethical, evidence-based AI innovation—ensuring that technological advances serve the most pressing needs of communities worldwide while maintaining the highest standards of responsibility and impact.
